Your Whole Foods – Natural Nutrition At Its Best

August 17th, 2009

With the onset of disease running rampant in our society, the need for your whole foods has never been more important.  America is a prosperous nation, with much opportunity and convienience.  Unfortunately degenerative diseases abound in the USA despite our scientific breakthroughs in medicine. Then with prescription medication comes the myriad of side effects that could actually known to cause serious harm or even death. Some choose to take the lesser of two evils and decide to risk the possibility of side effects or suffer with an illness that may or may not cause your demise. I for one believe individuals need to concider taking on an alternative method of nurturing their bodies. People must get the proper nutrition to perform at their peek levels that life demands.

There are many alternative treatments for just about every illness known to man. One suggested treatment would be getting your whole foods included in your daily diet. Prescription medications encompass long lists of known side effects.Alternative treatments can include homeopathic, herbs and of course eating a healthy diet.

When it comes to nutrition Americans diets are by far one of the worst when compared to other industrialized countries.  Americans have traded good nutritious food for more carbohydrates than our bodies can tolerate. Once upon a time, our parents ensured we get the proper nutrition our bodies need. Unfortunately those times are a thing of the past.  Presently Americans load up on sugars and other non-food items that make their natural processes go off balance, which in turn cause disease. The effect of the imbalance in our diets show up as cancer and many other forms of disease. These diseases used to be ailments the elderly had to deal with, but now unfortunately are showing up in children. If we do no change our diet to include more fruits and vegetables it will continue to get worse. Our society will continue to get sicker and die younger.

There is an answer to this plight, Americans need to get more whole food nutrition in their diet. Your whole foods can be such as carrots, celery, broccoli, tomatoes and other vegetables. Lets not forget the ever so important fruits as well. Apples, oranges, grapes, grapefruit,  and strawberries are just a few excellent choices. Settle for some raw fruits and veggies for that afternoon snack. For lunch instead of opting for the burger and fries combo, how about fresh salad greens with grilled chicken and balsamic vinaigrette dressing or even a veggie plate. Be imaginative in adding vegetables to your day. The rewards will be a smaller waist line and it will lower your risk of disease.

Common Natural Supplements and Vitamins for Pets

November 27th, 2009

One thing to keep in mind is that our metabolism and animals’ are different. There are some supplements that are fine for a human but can cause damage to a cat or dog. Always consult your vet before giving vitamins or supplements to your dog or cat.

Remember, vitamins and supplements for your pets shouldn’t be used to replace seeing a vet. Your pet cats and dogs should have regular checkups and be taken to a vet if they appear to be ill. You should make sure you always inform your vet of any type of vitamins or supplements you are giving your pet.

This is especially true if you cat or dog is being treated for a condition which requires medication. This is because some medications will act adversely when taken with other types of medication or supplements. Always consult your veterinarian and ask for their recommendations before starting your pets on vitamins or herbal supplements.

Listed below are some of the common vitamins and supplements that are being given to pets to promote health and treat ailments.

Glucosamine and Chondroitan- These are well known and are commonly prescribed by veterinarians to treat pets who are suffering from arthritis and joint pain. They are known to help rebuild cartilage and thicken joint fluid which cushions and protects the joints.

Milk Thistle- This has been used for pets with liver problems such as hepatitis. It is suppose to protect liver cells from toxins.

Ginger- This has been used in Chinese medicine for centuries as an anti-inflammatory and also for stomach problems. It has been known to help animals with car sickness and with digestive problems, including diarrhea and gas.

Vitamin C- This vitamin is a powerful anti-oxidant which is said to help combat the aging process and cancer. It has also can be used for hip dysphasia, arthritis and urinary tract problems.

Echinacea- This supplement is said to improve the immune system and helps to fight off infections and diseases.

Slippery Elm- The bark of this tree is used to help the digestive system in pets who suffer from upset stomachs and constipation.  It has also been known to be used as a cough suppressant.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids- The oils from cold water fish have been known to be beneficial to pets. They have been used to aid in treatment of heart disease, cancer, allergies, arthritis and kidney disease.

Choline- This supplement can be helpful to pets that have cognitive disorders and seizures.

There are certain vitamins that seem to help different parts of your pet’s body. For example Vitamin A is used for healthy skin and coat.  Vitamin E helps to ease the discomfort of arthritis and cancer. Vitamin D is essential for bone development, and nerve and muscle functions. Vitamin B helps with growth and metabolism.

Make sure you read the directions thoroughly and always give the recommended dosage to your pet. You might want to consult with your vet on the dosage for your particular pet. Remember, even though a vitamin or supplement is considered natural that doesn’t necessarily mean it is safe. Always closely monitor your pet after you have given them any new type of vitamin or supplement to watch for signs of an allergic reaction. The items listed above are just a few of the different varieties of supplements available for use on pets. Your veterinarian will be able to advise you on which type of product will work best for your four-legged companion.

To make sure your pets stays healthy and will enjoy a long life, you might want to consider buying pet insurance in case there will be unforeseen medical expenses in the years to come. You have health insurance on the rest of your family and for peace of mind you might want to get pet insurance on your four-legged companions.

Is Your Body Acidic or Alkaline? Vulnerable to Bad Health?

October 30th, 2009

Your body is supposed to have a natural acid/alkaline balance. However, medications, sugars, poor diet and stress can all make the body more acidic.

When the body is acidic, yeast, bacteria, viruses and cancer can thrive. Conversely, when the body is alkaline, foreign bacteria, viruses, yeast and cancer can not live.

Our body has a natural balance called homeostasis. When we are too acidic, minerals, such as calcium, are leached from our bones to help alkalize the body. Another way our body tries to protect us from acid is to buffer it with fat and store it in the body.

Luckily, there are ways to naturally boost your PH which should stay at 7.365. Eating more green vegetables and less sugars, meat and dairy. There are also some great supplements out there that are alkalizing as well.

How many Biotin & Brewer’s Yeast capsules can I give to my dog, and is this is okay to feed?

October 11th, 2009

I want to give my Cane Corso (Italian Mastiff) Biotin & Brewer’s Yeast, and I was originally going to just order from Dr.’s Foster & Smith in the powder forms made for dogs. But people I know are telling me I can just go to Walmart or local drugstore and get them in tablet or capsule form that people take and feed to her with meals. I had been buying Grizzly Salmon oil, and after going through several bottles, I finally just bought regular Omega-3 fish oil caplets from the vitamin aisle today when I was at Walmart. I am just not sure how many of those to give her, either? She is a puppy & 40-50 lbs-ish. Can anyone help me out here? Are there any other vitamins or supplements I might want to give her, and can you tell me what exactly they’re for?

She is eating kibble right now, and I am wanting to go all natural here soon, just not sure where to start… The raw diet honestly scares the hell out me, even though I know that’s what comes natural to dogs in the wild. I guess I would be more openminded to a "home cooked" diet at the moment. I honestly do not care to switch her to yet another kibble that everyone thinks is so much better than the others. Truth is, they all suck, and aren’t as good as real food. You’re just going to pay a hell of a lot more for one vs. others. Right now, she gets Pro Plan large breed kibble with puppy vitamins & salmon oil and 2 tablespoons of soft food mixed in (same brand) And we also add a boiled egg and a spoon of peanut butter with that for added protein. Petco is the large pet supply store closest to me, and honestly, I read lots of ingredients labels, and Pro Plan was the only food I could find that the first ingredient was meat and rice and not a "meal" product. She gets real liver and fish for snacks, and some other treats we bought that are supposedly organic. I’d like to know what other foods I can give her that will make up a complete balanced & nourished diet to where she’s not lacking anything essential so that I can do away with the kibble completely. But like I mentioned before, I’d honestly prefer to go the homecooked route vs. raw for the time being if anyone could help me. Any vitamins or supplements that would be helpful, just let me know and I will look into it! I want better for my furbaby and the storebought stuff is just not cutting it for us.

And again, if anyone could tell me how many tablets/capsules of Biotin, Brewer’s Yeast, & Omega-3 Fish Oil to give a large mastiff puppy, I’d really appreciate it! :-)
Hi Lizzie,

I haven’t actually given her Biotin or Brewer’s Yeast, yet. I wanted to figure out how much was okay first. She is, however, getting Grizzly wild salmon oil daily with her kibble. Her coat is remarkably shiny, I think the salmon oil is helping with that. I have heard nothing but horrible things about dry kibble. She is on Pro Plan which was the best I could find at the local pet store. I just don’t know where to start with real food or which vitamins and supplements she should get… I’m just looking for a better way!

Please don’t overdo the supplementation. Ask the breeder of your dog what, if anything, is best to supplement your dog’s food with. Please keep in mind that if you are feeding a balanced diet to your dog then anything you add to it will unbalance the diet.
